Marvin Eric Taylor
2023-09-25I am the oldest daughter of Marvin. I wanted to let people know a little bit of dads life after Southfield High.In 1965, dad married mom (Lynda Hansen - class of 1963). They began their married life with dad stationed on Grosse Ile in the Navy. After the Navy, I believe dad hads a short stint on the Berkley Fire Department. He went on to proudly serve on the Southfield Fire Department from which he retired after 20+ years of service. Dad spent the last seven years of his life working at the Bay Pointe Country Club in West Bloomfield, which I don't think he really thought of as a job, but more of a place to socialize. During the off season, he and mom enjoyed going to Florida and Tennessee, visiting family and friends. In September 2003, dad was diagnosed with liver cancer. He passed away 5 days later. He was survived by mom, me, my sister Tina, our husbands and five beautiful grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two infant grandchildren.Dad was a great people person. He would talk to anyone, anywhere, about anything.
tribute by Vicki HartleyI am the eldest daughter of Marv and thought I would share a few things with you. My dad married Lynda Hansen( Southfield class of 63) in February 1965. They began their marriage with my dad stationed on Grosse Ile, in the Navy. Dad went on to proudly serve on the Southfield Fire Department, from which he retired after 20+ years of service. Once retired, he worked part-time at the Bay Pointe Country Club in West Bloomfield. When my sister and I were growing up, the Taylor house became the house that everyone hung out at. Dad was affectionately referred to as Mr. T. He was a very non-judgemental person, when it came to our friends. They could confide in him and know that whatever conversation they had with him, stayed with him. When dad was diagnosed with cancer in 2003, and we knew he wouldn't be with us much longer, he had many visitors. There were phone calls from friends and fellow firefighters from out of state, a steady stream of firefighters, and several of our childhood friends that needed to see Mr. T. A testimony to his nature was when a childhood friend came to visit and wore all of his Ohio State gear. He and dad had a standing bet on the Ohio State/Michigan game. I said to my friend, couldn't you show a dying man some respect? My friends answer was "No way, he's laying there in UofM pj's." To this, my dad smiled and chuckled. (This friend did wear a UofM button that played the fight song to my dads memorial). To this day, I have friends who wish they could talk to Mr. T just one more time.Dad died 5 days after the diagnosis came in. He was survived by his wife of 38 years, Lynda and his two daughters, Vicki and Tina. He had two son-in-laws, Eric and John, and five grandchildren. He had two infant grandchildren that preceded him in death. He is missed by us all!
