1944-02-18 2014-05-14
David F Crawford died May 14, 2014.

He was born Feb. 18, 1944 in Detroit, Mich. to Raymond and Mary Crawford.

Dave was an adventurer, electrician, road-trip junkie, son, brother, uncle and the archetypal cowboy. He lived in many states, was a proud veteran, enjoyed the company of horses and loved his boat.

He will be greatly missed.

He leaves behind one brother, Raymond (Denise) Crawford, five nieces and nephews; Denis Crawford, Michael (Cindy) Crawford, Deb (Dave) Hub, Peter (Jana) Crawford, and Liz (Dave) Brennan.

He also leaves behind 20 great-nieces and great-nephews.

Airborne, Dave.  Sorry we didn't reconnect in person since 1964 but I really enjoyed exchanging e-mails after we found one another again on an 82nd Airborne website.  All the stories about the Lumber River float trip and rambling around in my Morris Minor, etc, etc., really brought back great memories.  RIP buddy.

Dave and I began exchanging emails and occassionally phone calls in December 2005. I don't remember how I located him as we had not spoken since graduation. From his obituary and profile information on this website you can get a good idea of what his life has been like.  Besides being disabled in 1991 from being rearended in a car accident, he also had throat cancer in 2006 and 2008 which were cured and heart problems which finally caused his death. He was in a hospital for a heart operation but his heart condition was so bad that they could not operate and he passed away in the hospital. He loved being independent and living on his boat. He did not have a wide social circle of friends beyond those he dealt with at the grocery and hardware stores, marina owner, etc. In 2000 he did develop one unusual friendship which was with a female seagull whom he called Boogity. Boogity would wake him up in the moring by tapping on his window or hatch and Dave would feed her certain meats and cheeses. Boogity was finicky about what she liked to eat. When Dave would return from a long absence from being treated in Minneapolis for health problems, Boogity would be there the next day to greet him. Boogity will miss Dave. A funny story Dave told me happened I think when he was working on the Alaskan pipeline. He was out somewhere in a field working when he felt a goose in the rear. He turned around to see a bear which somehow he out ran to safety. Dave would really liked to have attended our reunion but he was not healthy enough to do it. He really enjoyed looking at all the pictures which brought back memories to him. Prior to the reunion he began communicating with Rita quite often and after the reunion he connected with Cheryl Commons and Donny Buddemeier. I'm sorry he is gone, but I think he was happy with the 70 years he lived.
