Ferguson, James L. 8/30/1944 - 6/4/2016

James Lee "Jim" Ferguson, individualist, naturist, lover of railroads, opera, the sea, his family and his risen Lord Jesus Christ departed this life June 4, 2016 in peace at his Ann Arbor home of nearly 40 years. He had been ill for about three weeks.

Jim was born to Robert W. and Doreen Elizabeth (Dalson) Ferguson on August 30, 1944 in Muskegon, Michigan. He spent his childhood years in Oak Park and Southfield, Michigan and graduated as salutatorian of Southfield High School in 1962. Following four years of service as a Petty Officer in the U.S. Navy, Jim earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Michigan in 1971. Jim retired in 2007 after a 30-year career as an Engineer in Research for the U-M Department of Pharmacology.

Jim is survived by his wife of 31 years, Lonnie Harvey of Ann Arbor, two sons, Matthew Ferguson (Joan Bolander) of Lansing, and Michael Ferguson of Ann Arbor, a brother, Jack (Kathy) Ferguson of Coldwater, Michigan and two grandchildren, Rachel and Charles Ferguson, also of Lansing.

Jim liked to spend his time lying in the sunshine either in his backyard or, in earlier years, at any number of swimming holes along the Huron River. He enjoyed grapefruit juice, granola, cats, his raspberry and lilac bushes, reading, walks around the neighborhood, bike riding, sailing and his extensive collection of model trains. At times, Jim could be a stubborn old goat. But he had a great sense of humor and his love and dedication to all of us was never in doubt. In all, he was a good, humble, honest and faithful man.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, June 15, 2016 at 7PM at Crossroads Community Baptist Church of Ann Arbor, 2580 Packard Rd. Casual attire is strongly encouraged. According to his wishes, Jim's remains have been cremated and will be scattered in a private service at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Arbor Hospice of Ann Arbor.
