Comment:
I attended the School of Architecture at the University of Detroit and graduated from their six year architectural design program in spring 1968. After working the summer as an architect, I attended Naval Officer Candidate School and was commissioned a Navy officer late in 1968 and was assigned to the Civil Engineer Corps. Kaye Lochmandy of Elkhart, Indiana, a 1970 nursing graduate at Mercy College and I were married in the spring of 1969 and have enjoyed a 43 year soul journey together. I deployed to Vietnam the summer of 1969 and spent a year as a combat Seabee in Quang Tri and DaNang. Returning to the States in 1970 we spent the next two years in Gulfport, Mississippi and three years in southern California before leaving the Navy. Kaye and I enjoy spending much of out time visiting our children, their spouses, our fifteen grandchildren, gardening and maintaining our three plus acres in Farmington Hills, along with summer vacations to the cottage in Western Michigan and winter trips to Florida. Personally, I serve as a Trustee for the Farmington Community Foundation; enjoy woodworking and pen and ink sketching; and wine and art collecting. Fifty years have been but a fleeting moment. I look forward to renewing and making new friendships at the reunion. |

Comment:
During our senior year, I was invited to attend Monteith College, an experimental college within Wayne State University. I accepted and started classes with fellow SFH classmates David Jorgensen and Tim Schlenkert. It was there that I met my future wife and fellow student, Mary. We wed in May of 1964. I continued college part-time while working full-time in the photo department at J.L. Hudson's. I graduated from Monteith in 1970 with a Bachelor of Philosophy. My philosophy: Work hard while doing as little as possible (learn to oversee and delegate). At that point, Mary and I had two children and our first home; I continued classes at WSU working on a Masters. I left Hudsons in 1972 as a buyer in the photo area in order to become a sales rep for a local photofinisher. In 1981, I founded Patalidis & Associates, a manufacturers rep organization specializing in the photo industry (cameras, lenses, photo albums, photo bags and various photo accessory items). The firm still exists, although the industry has definitely changed. My son is now the lead sales rep, covering MI, OH and a portion of IN. I am semi-retired. I still like conducting business on a personal level -- remember eye-to-eye contact, honesty, integrity and closing a deal with a handshake -- unfortunately a way of doing business that is not often found anymore. I enjoy spending time with family (two children, two grandchildren and one great grandaughter who will celebrate her first birthday this month). We are lucky to have them all within an 80-mile radius. I also like spending time at our condo in paradise -- St. Kitts, purchased in 1990, water views, golf and target shooting. Politically I have grown from an all-out liberal (SDS member) described by my mother-in-law as "that hippie french man with a beret, dirty tennis shoes and a sportscar" into an indendpent thinker leaning toward the Tea Party and Libertarians. |

Occupation: | retired metallurgical engineer |
Comment:
I graduated from Michigan Tech in 1966 with a BS degree in Metallurgical Engineering. My first job, fresh out of college, was with U.S. Steel. I worked in the steel mills at Gary, Indiana and Chicago. I married in 1971 and moved to Pueblo, Colorado where I was employed at CF&I Steel Corporation. Our son, David, was born in 1974. (During our 10 year stay in Colorado, we had the great pleasure to blaze trails at most of the ski areas.) After a 1981 divorce, I eventually moved to Kentucky and worked for Kentucky Electric Steel (KES) Corporation. After a brief stint there, the steel mill shut down due to an employee strike. I then went to work at Border Steel Mills in El Paso, TX. KES re-opened under new ownership and I returned to the Ashland, KY area in 1986. Frances and I married in 1989 and have lived in Russell, KY ever since. I retired from KES in 2007; Frances retired from Russell schools in 2008 as a National Board Certified science teacher. In summary, my 40 plus year career as a Metallurgical Engineer in a number of different supervisory capacities took me to five different steel mills located in five different states. Presently, I am a Metallurgical Engineering Consultant at Steel of West Virginia in Huntington, WV. Even though my career has taken me a number of different places, I have always considered myself to be a “Michigander” no matter where I have hung my (hard) hat. My son, David, is the YMCA Director for the Central Kentucky Arts and Humanities programs. He also plays guitar for a jazz band, Superfecta, in his hometown, Lexington, KY. His wife, Kelly, is a teacher and professional pianist. They have twin seven year olds. Frances has two daughters. Sara is a police officer in Dublin, Ohio and also has an on-line jewelry business, SparklingShamrock.etsy.com. She has 12 year old twins. Susan is a medical doctor in Hanford, CA. Her husband is a Navy Commander and F-18 Hornet aviator. They also have two children. It’s always great to get together with them, along with the six grandkids. Frances and I are involved in church activities. I am a member of Gideons International and a Threshold Program mentor at the Ashland Federal Prison. The prison mentoring program prepares the inmates to re-enter society upon their release. I still enjoy skiing in West Virginia each winter and golfing all other times of the year. I have recently been a co-author for a book, The History of Greenup County, Kentucky (the county where we live). The book will be published this summer. I wrote about the charcoal- fired iron blast furnaces that were prevalent in this area during the early to mid-1800’s. The iron products from these furnaces were instrumental during the U.S. westward expansion and also during the Civil War. All of this was going on before the massive iron ore discovery in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. We have a summer cottage on Lake Superior, near Houghton, MI. Each year we spend at least a couple of months there golfing, fishing, and kayaking. We love living in Kentucky, but it’s always great to be back in Michigan, especially for the fall colors. |

I graduated with a teaching degree from MSU and taught 2nd grade for 35 years in my hometown of Lathrup Village. At State, I had classes with Bill McIntyre (class of ’63), whom I had previously known in the SHS Ski Club and as Bonnie and Barbara Lutz’ childhood cousin. We were married in 1967 and my childhood friend, Susan Goudie, was my maid of honor. Bill and I had a friendly divorce 7 years later. Playing tennis 5 days a week introduced me to my husband Larry. At that time, he had two sons at the University of Michigan and a daughter at Roeper so we didn’t start a new family. His three kids are a joy and we are all very close. Larry and I live in Naples, Florida, for 7 months and Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, for 5 months. We love retirement and enjoy golf and tennis. We have been lucky – no hospital stays and healthy bodies… just MS for me (under control) and Alzheimer’s for Larry. We are lucky to have wonderful kids, friends, two homes we enjoy, and 31 years together. I look forward to seeing everyone at the reunion. I’ll be the one saying, “How did I know you?” ;-) |

Education: I completed a BA degree in Business Management in night school at University of Maryland in 1973 and a second Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science in 1994. I completed a Masters of Systems Engineering from George Washington University in 2006. Career: After high school I was in the Navy for 7 years; two years technical training as an Electronics Technician and Inertial Navigation Systems Technician. I spent 11 months getting submarine qualified on U. S. S. Sea Robin; and 4 years as Inertial Navigation Technician on U. S. S. Will Rogers. I am a Will Rogers “plank owner” and served all through new construction, shakedown cruises, and five patrols. This experience and training was the foundation of my remaining career. After the Navy I worked in the defense industry doing systems engineering work for Polaris/Poseidon submarine training sites for Control Data Corporation in the Washington D.C. area. At the start of the Trident program in 1974 I was a consultant to the Navy Program Manager responsible for planning and implementing the Trident Training Facility at Bangor Washington. Then I had the opportunity to join a start up systems engineering company in 1976 where I was a Vice President for Training Systems. In 1982 I left them to start another company to develop Personal Computer software. My partner, David and I worked as Navy consultants during the day, and developed networking software at night. We received patents for wide- area networking and for digital rights management. Later, as an independent contractor I managed a joint venture company performing a technical services contract for the Trident Submarine Ship Acquisition Program. Major defense cuts ended my Navy consulting work after 24 years when the Cold War ended. So I joined Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC). I have been working on various Government IT programs for EPA and DOT for the past 18 years. I’m currently working on a project for Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. I married in 1965 but separated just before my last patrol and divorced in 1971. I have two daughters from that marriage, Elisabeth and Carol. Both live in California. Elisabeth is a mother of two boys and grandmother to three (what does that make me?) Carol is unmarried and doing missionary work in inner cities. I met Janice in 1977 and we married in 1982. We celebrated our 30 year anniversary this past spring. We have two children; William and Mary. Both are musicians. William graduated from George Mason University. He writes marching band and drum line programs for several different high schools; and he has coached teams to championships in national competitions. Mary graduated from Northwestern University last year. She’s a gifted Oboe player and has one more year to complete a Masters degree at Cleveland Institute of Music. Then I can retire. We enjoy our skiing vacations in Winter Park, Colorado and beach vacations in Ocean City, Maryland. Janice and I both enjoy running and hiking; but our days of backpacking segments of the Appalachian Trail are over. My creative impulses have been channeled into photography, bricklaying, cooking, writing, reading, and searching for the lost word. Travel, painting and sculpting are on hold until I retire. |
